The ARC of Harrisonburg and Rockingham has been meeting the needs of individuals with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities since 1962. Our goal is simple: To assist you in finding the best services within our community for your special needs individual.

The ARC of Harrisonburg and Rockingham is part of the nation's largest volunteer organization devoted solely to the welfare of persons with developmental disabilities. Members include parents, professionals, persons with developmental disabilities, and concerned citizens. The staff and volunteers work to minimize the effects of developmental disabilities. Developmental disabilities should not be confused with mental illness.

The ARC is a non-profit, membership organization which advocates for persons with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities such as autism and cerebral palsy. Our primary responsibility is to get governmental agencies to provide for their needs, but we do provide services when necessary such as day camps, recreation programs, informational speakers and more. The Op Shop, located in the Lucy F. Simms Center, is a licensed day support program for adults whose functioning levels prevent them from qualifying for other day programs.
